The Cracked Jug
Short film based on a poem by 17-year-old Shakira Morar, winner of the Poetry for Peace 2016 competition. Her prize was to have a film made of her poem and I was invited to direct it.
The competition brief was to write a poem based on an object in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Shakira chose a Mesopotamian jug.
The film shows how everyday life is disrupted by war, focusing on a young girl’s use of the jug.
Shakira performed the narration. The poem has also been subtitled in Arabic as one of the aims of the competition is building bridges between English and Arabic-speaking communities.
Produced by the Poetry Society.
